My eyes needed a moment or two to adjust to the darkness before I located Jeremy sprawled on a chaise near the back fence.
âMind if I pull up a chair?â I asked as I dragged one over to him. If he glanced up, I couldnât tell.
âMan, I really blew it giving that cow such a mouthful. Nothing like being a dickhead for the cameras.â Jeremyâs voice, while tired, still had a sharp edge.
âIt doesnât mean you killed her.â I paused for a beat. âYou didnât, did you?â
âDonât be a dill.â
âNot being fluent in Aussie slang, Iâll take that as a no,â I said as I leaned back on the chaise and stared up into the velvety darkness. Living under the canopy of light over the Strip, Iâd forgotten how many stars hung in the night sky. âWant to tell me what happened? In American?â
âI donât know what happened. My client hired me to check out her hunch that somebody was playing fast and loose in the sports book at her casino. The house had lost money it shouldnât have.â
âAnd that led you to Numbers Neidermeyer?â
âNot directly. I wasnât checking leads as much as following hunches. I hit a nerve when I cornered Ms. Neidermeyer. She lit into me. I didnât handle it well, but I didnât kill her.â
âIs that what you told the police?â
âYeah. Your buddy, Detective Romeo, banged on the door here around noon. He wanted to talk. I didnât see any harm in that, so I agreed and followed him to the station. I told him everything I know, but the bloody wanker kept me there for five hours.â He rolled over on his side, facing me. âIf I was going to kill anybody, right now heâs at the top of the list.â
I could see Jeremyâs eyes, but the darkness shadowed his features, hiding any emotion lurking there. However, the line of his body betrayed his anger.
âUnderstandable.â Secretly I was glad it was Romeo. The kid owed me, big time. âHow do you think they tied you in so fast?â
âIâve been wondering the same thing myself. Somebody mustâve ratted me out.â
âYeah, but who? The casino was practically deserted when I saw you two going at it.â
âWere you the big mouth?â Jeremy asked, his voice tight.
âTo quote a good friend of mine, âdonât be a dill.ââ I shivered. The night air had turned cool. Even Teddieâs sweatshirt wasnât quite enough. âWhoâs your client?â
âYou know I canât tell you that. If itâs any consolation, I didnât tell the police either.â
âLast time I checked, this country had done away with thumbscrews and waterboards. You donât have to tell the police anything.â
âI do if I want to keep my P.I. license. But my client isnât germane to the investigation. At the time, I hadnât given her a report so she didnât know anything.â
âExcept what she suspects,â I reminded him. âYouâre splitting hairs with the policeânot wise considering they have your neck under a boot. Youâd better tell them, and, if Iâm going to help, youâd better tell me.
